Karunamaya Goswami son of Rashbihari Goswami was born on 11 March 1943 in Gosain Chandura, a village in the district of Mymensingh, Bangladesh. He passed M.A. in English and got Ph.D. in Music from Dhaka University. He rose to the rank of Professor of English and retired as Principal from the General Education Service. He now worked as Principal, Cambrian College, Gulshan-2, Dhaka.
Dr. Goswami is an eminent educationist, researcher, essayist, musicologist, translator, editor and compiler. Although he is best known at home and abroad for his insightful writings on music, his contribution as a literary critic and translator is also very commendable. Karunamaya contributed the article on the evolution of Bengali Songs in Garland Encyclopedia of Music, New York, 1999 and an entry on the same subject to Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians Second, London, 2000. He planned, compiled and edited South Asia's pioneering audio history of songs in 1995. Published from Dhaka it was named as History of Bengali Music in Sound.
